The first time I met Sophie in Paris, she asked me right away if I knew some authentic Parisian bars, some places that still have soul… I was about to tell her about my two favorite places in my neighborhood, but then it hit me: they had just closed! Montmartre had just lost both this legendary night-bar, Le Jack, where you could drink cheap beer ‘til 8am and meet the craziest people, and Le Vivarium, where you could still play table football.
Like the places I would have loved for her to see, Sophie has soul. You can hear it in her voice and in the words she sings.
This Take-Away Show! I was about to call it “A Drunken Night with Sophie Hunger”, because the night we shot “The Sad Fisherman”, we did a lot of pre-gaming in the bars around the Canal St-Martin with Chris, Michael, and Evelinn Trouble, Sophie’s musicians. Evelinn is 17 and was about to take her final exams a few weeks later… It was as unexpected for her as it was for Sophie to happen to be opening for Stephan Eicher in Paris. They’re both more accustomed to playing in front of 20 people in some club in Zurich. The craziest thing was when one of those 20 people happened to be walking near the Canal St-Martin that night and recognize Sophie while we were filming!
The day after that drunken night, we thought it could be nice to organize a little show outside the venue where they could sell the CD… Sophie made such an impression opening the show and there, singing in the streets, that they sold their 70 CDs in about twenty minutes. But that didn’t prevent them from keeping on playing; they would never stop, even if they could.
The day after, they were all gone back to Zurich, but they’ll be back in Paris on September 17th to play La Maroquinerie.
