SUBTLE MEN

You find a concept, you like it, you’d like to do it yourself–but how do you avoid copying? When I proposed that we do a Split Series, Chryde gave me permission to try my hand at a Take-Away Show. I had several ideas of artists. Two Swedes. Two Annes, one Ane and one Anna.

First was Anna Ternheim, before her concert at Point Ephémère, during a short moment before soundcheck. I was really stressed: I was doing this alone and we had no collar mic to record with, so we couldn’t do anything while walking outside. Then I spotted a gallery space near the café, but Anna would rather the performance be smaller, more intimate, in one of the rooms. In a cozy moment, tranquilly set up on the sofa, Anne plays us “No Subtle Men” of her last album, Separation Road. Two men are there, a discreet audience.

The second was just as stressful. This time, because of the weather: it was raining outside of Café de la Danse, so it seemed like it would be hard to film outside. To top it all off, Ane Brun is tired: she had had to get up really early in order to get to Paris and play that night, accompanied by Nina Kinert. Luckily, Ane is up for anything, and just then the rain stops falling. Ane and Nina turn out to be a rather successful duo, even I spite of their fatigue: a “Song Number 6” is all finesse and complicity between them.

Thanks to Chryde for his help on Ane Brun’s session, and, above all, Anna, Ane, and Nina for the time they spent doing this. Vive Sweden!
